Jako novinář vyšetřoval zabíjení, případy politické korupce nebo volební nekalé praktiky, ale také rád píše o kinematografii a literatuře. Do Prahy přijel indický autor Ashutosh Bhardwaj hledat ozvěny 60. let a pátrat po stopách, které zde zanechal spisovatel a myslitel Nirmal Varma.

Ashutosh Bhardwaj je indický novinář, spisovatel a literární kritik. V současné době žije v Ágře, kde pracuje jako nezávislý novinář. Spolupracoval se dvěma největšími indickými mediálními domy, The Indian Express a Outlook. Píše v hindštině a angličtině a rád experimentuje s prózou v různých podobách a žánrech.

Jako novinář cestoval po střední Indii a dokumentoval život kmenů, jež se ocitli uprostřed konfliktu mezi maoistickými povstalci a policií. Vyšetřoval zabíjení, případy politické korupce nebo volební nekalé praktiky. V roce 2015 se jeho cestopis o třítýdenním pobytu s maoistickými povstalci v džungli Days & Nights in the Forest dostal do užšího výběru Ceny Kurta Schorka agentury Reuters. Je jediným novinářem v Indii, který vyhrál Cenu Ramnatha Goenka za vynikající výsledky v žurnalistice čtyři po sobě jdoucí roky (2012–15).

Autorova tvorba

Vydal pět knih, mezi nimi například sbírku povídek Jo Frame Men Na The nebo originální biografii regionu Dandakaranya The Death Script a její hindské vydání Mrityu Katha. Je také autorem několika dalších povídek, deníků, cestopisů a kritických esejů.

The Death Script byl nominován na několik literárních cen a je vítězem Ceny Atta Galatta za nejlepší faktografickou knihu roku 2020. Jeho kniha esejů o literatuře a filmu Pitra Vadh byla oceněna prestižní cenou Devi Shankar Avasthi Samman za nejlepší dílo literární kritiky v roce 2020.

Praha město literatury UNESCO – rezidence květen a červen 2023

Ashutosh Bhardwaj tráví květen a červen 2023 v Praze v rámci svého dvouměsíčního rezidenčního pobytu Praha město literatury. Bude zde pokračovat v psaní biografie Nirmala Varmy, hindského spisovatele, myslitele a překladatele.

Nirmal Varma pobýval v letech 1959–1968 v Praze, kam přijel na základě pozvání Orientálního ústavu AV ČR. Během pobytu se naučil česky a díky tomu přeložil do hindštiny mnoho děl českých spisovatelů jako je Milan Kundera nebo Karel Čapek. Praha se objevila také v několika Varmových povídkách a byla dějištěm jeho prvního románu.

Bhardwaj plánuje navštívit místa, která se objevují ve Varmových knihách, a prozkoumat průniky mezi Varmovou fikcí a realitou. Prostřednictvím hledání stop, které v současné Praze spisovatel zanechal, se pokusí znovu objevit Varmovu Prahu 60. let a prozkoumat tak změny, které se udály během uplynulých pěti dekád.

As a journalist, he has investigated encounter killings, cases of political corruption and electoral malpractices, but he also likes to write about cinema and literature. Indian author Ashutosh Bhardwaj came to Prague to search for echoes of the 60s and to search for traces left by the writer and thinker Nirmal Verma.

Ashutosh Bhardwaj is a journalist, writer and literary critic coming from India. Currently, he lives in Agra, working there as an independent journalist and a writer. Writing in Hindi and English, he experiments with prose in various forms and genres.

He has worked with two of India’s biggest media houses, The Indian Express and Outlook, at senior editorial positions.

As a journalist, he has travelled across Central India and documented the conditions of tribes caught in the conflict between the Maoist insurgents and the police. He has investigated encounter killings, cases of political corruption and electoral malpractices. In 2015, his travelogue about three-week stay with the Maoist insurgents in their jungle camps Days & Nights in the Forest was shortlisted for the Reuters‘ Kurt Schork Awards in Local Journalism. He is the only journalist in India to have won the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism for four consecutive years (2012-15).

He has published five books, amongst them a story collection Jo Frame Men Na The, or a creative biography of the Dandakaranya region, The Death Script, and its Hindi version Mrityu Katha. He is also an author of several other stories, diaries, travelogues and critical essays.

The Death Script has been shortlisted for several literary awards and is the winner of the Best Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2020 Atta Galatta award. And his book of essays on literature and cinema, Pitra Vadh, was awarded the prestigious Devi Shankar Avasthi Samman for the best work of literary criticism in 2020.

Prague UNESCO City of Literature – residency stay in May and June 2023

During his time in Prague as a writer in residence, he wants to continue writing the biography of Nirmal Verma, a Hindi writer, thinker and translator. Verma has come to Prague in 1959 upon the invitation of the Oriental Institute of Prague and spent almost ten years there, learning Czech during his stay and eventually translating works of Czech writers like Milan Kundera and Karel Čapek into Hindi. Prague also appeared in several of his short stories and has been the setting of his first novel.

Bhardwaj plans to visit the places that appear in Verma’s fiction and analyse their intersections with his works. Through finding his traces in Prague of today, he will attempt to rediscover Prague as Verma saw it in the 1960s and mark the transitions.
